In urban areas dominated by high-rise buildings, multi-level and underground parking facilities are essential for various establishments. The growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has led to changes in building management and fire safety, including the integration of EV charging stations and designated parking zones. EV fires, particularly those involving lithium-ion batteries, present unique challenges such as prolonged burning, difficulty in extinguishing, high water usage, and risk of toxic vapor release especially dangerous in enclosed spaces like underground carparks. The battery placement at the vehicle’s base further complicates fire suppression. To address these risks, a combination of active fire protection systems, specialized firefighting equipment, and tailored passive fire protection (PFP) strategies is necessary. Proactive safety enhancements are crucial to ensure the resilience of urban infrastructure as EV adoption increases.
