Lithium-Ion Battery Fires – What We Know, and What We Don’t
11 Nov 2026
Theatre B
FIA Keynotes
As the use of lithium-ion batteries continues to grow across electric vehicles, energy storage systems and consumer electronics, so too does the challenge of understanding and managing the associated fire risks. While these technologies offer significant benefits, they also present unique hazards that continue to be the subject of ongoing research and debate.
This session will separate fact from fiction by examining what is currently understood about lithium-ion battery fires, why thermal runaway occurs, and the practical realities of prevention, suppression and incident response. Attendees will gain a balanced overview of the latest evidence, common misconceptions and the areas where further research is still needed.
