What the course covers

Roles & responsibilities of traffic controllers and spotters

Signals & communication: standard hand signals, STOP/GO bat use, radios/whistles, line-of-sight and acknowledgement

Worksite layout & setup: approach taper, buffer zones, cones, barriers, delineators, lighting for dusk/night works

Signage basics: advance warning, speed control, detours, lane closures, and visibility requirements

PPE & positioning: high-visibility apparel, footwear, gloves, eye/ear protection; safe stance and escape routes

Managing vehicle movement: heavy vehicles, reversing operations, plant blind spots, banksman/spotter coordination

Pedestrian & public safety: crossing points, exclusion zones, barricades and clear briefings

Hazard control & housekeeping: weather, surface conditions, poor visibility, distractions, fatigue

Incident & emergency response: near-miss reporting, scene protection, communication and escalation
Learning outcomes
Participants will be able to:

Set up and maintain a safe traffic control zone with correct signage and barriers;

Use standard signals/STOP-GO bat and radio calls clearly and consistently;

Coordinate with drivers, operators and spotters to prevent vehicle–pedestrian conflicts;

Apply PPE and safe positioning to reduce exposure;

Respond appropriately to incidents and changing site risks.
Who should attend
Workers assigned to traffic control or banksman/spotter duties at construction, maintenance, utilities, logistics yards and plant operations.
Assessment & certification
Assessment typically includes knowledge checks and a practical signalling/site-setup exercise. Successful participants receive a course certificate of completion from Ensure Safe Consultancy.
